Forward Deployed Engineer vs Solutions Engineer: What Is the Difference
A solutions engineer helps a customer decide to buy: demos, architecture sketches, answers to technical questions. A forward deployed engineer helps the customer succeed after the decision: builds the solution inside the customer's systems and takes it to production. Both are technical and customer-facing, but one works before the contract and the other after it.
01The short comparison
| Solutions engineer | Forward deployed engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Win and shape the deal | Make the solution work in production |
| When they work | Before and around the sale | After the sale, for the whole delivery |
| Writes production code | Rarely; demos and proofs of concept | Yes, in the client's environment |
| Owns | The technical answer | The working result |
| Measured by | Deals supported | Solution in use, on real data |
02Where the roles overlap
Both talk to customers in technical language and translate between business needs and engineering. A good solutions engineer can read a customer's setup quickly; a good forward deployed engineer can explain a trade-off to a non-technical owner. The overlap is communication. The difference is what happens next.
03A picture of one project
Usually a solutions engineer
- Discovery call
- Demo and architecture
- Technical answers to procurement
Usually a forward deployed engineer
- Build in client systems
- Production and handover
- Fixes on real data
04Signals in a job description or an offer
| If the text says | It is probably |
|---|---|
| Demos, proofs of concept, RFP answers, pre-sales calls | Solutions engineer |
| Own the deployment, integrate with the customer's systems, on-site or embedded | Forward deployed engineer |
| Quota support, pipeline, technical win | Solutions engineer |
| Production incidents, customer data pipelines, handover | Forward deployed engineer |
Titles are used loosely, so read the responsibilities, not the name. The question to ask is always the same: who is responsible when it runs on the customer's real data?
05Which one do you need for an AI project
- If you are choosing between products and need technical clarity before buying, you need solutions-engineering help.
- If you already know what to build and need it wired into your CRM, POS or messenger flow and kept running, you need a forward deployed engineer.
- If the task is a short integration, one person can often do both: scope it and build it.
I work as the second kind. Short projects start at $85 per hour, up to 20 hours, scoped after a short call.
FAQShort answers
- Is a forward deployed engineer more technical than a solutions engineer?
- Both are technical. The forward deployed engineer writes and ships production code in the client's systems; the solutions engineer mostly designs and demonstrates.
- Can the same person do both?
- On a small project, yes: scope the work, then build it. On large accounts the roles are usually split.
- Which role costs more?
- It depends on the market and the engagement. The price of an FDE reflects that they deliver working code and own the result.
