Forward deployed AI engineer: what it means

A forward-deployed AI engineer works inside the client’s business, looks at its real data and processes, and takes an AI solution to working production. This is how I work.

§01 What the role is

A forward-deployed engineer works inside the client’s business rather than in a product company’s office. They look at the client’s real data and processes and build the solution under them. They do not sell a finished product and do not hand a specification to programmers.

The term came from Palantir. It is now common at AI companies, where it names the people who bring models into a customer’s processes.

§02 How I work this way

Inside your team
Remote, embedded with your team and your systems; no handover of a spec.
Real data first
Start from the process and the data you already have; find the real requirement.
Into what you run
Integrate with the POS, booking system, CRM or messenger you already use, including systems I do not own.
To production
Tests, run modes, health checks, rehearsed releases; a harness I write verifies the result.
Deterministic where it matters
Amounts, forecasts and approvals are computed by code; the model does not decide them.
